about

this is the live album i've always wanted to make. the fact that, in hindsight, this one-night-only performance with intent to capture a releasable document went so well is pleasantly shocking. we came away from this of a mind that things did not run as smoothly as we hoped. a listen back, however, offered a completely different result. overall the musicianship is strong of which mitch & doug possess in aces. this would certainly not sound anywhere near as good if they were not present. i'm quite blessed to call them not only musical cohorts but also friends.

the collection of songs present within provides a nice cross section of material from my three previous solo offerings (“[the red album]”, “balance: the one-forty-seven manifesto”, and “songs for the phonophobic”). for me, the goal when performing material live is to not stray too far from the song proper so that it still conveys the same message as originally intended but also evolve over time with difference in arrangement and musical treatment. being an improvisational musician quite naturally offers new elements to that which are already in existence, but having musicians other than those on the original recordings interpret the material in their own idiosyncratic way breathes new life into the material and (at times) takes the music down the road less traveled. those are the times that i find inspirational and satisfying.

i’m still an “album” guy. i am partial to collections of songs that are of a piece as opposed to material slapped together with no rhyme or reason. with that in mind, our performance set lists are created to offer enough stability and natural movement from one song to the next to keep the audience in their place while still throwing an occasional monkey wrench into the mix. this recording captures the entire set purposely designed for an evening of musical exploration on 2 may 2014 at a quaint venue called the tramontane café in central new york. this is how it went down as documented on this piece of plastic (or intangible digital file containers, whichever you prefer), for better or worse. i tend to lean towards the former as I hope you.

enjoy!
